Kagan Structures

I just had a chance to check out the Kagan structures and my very first impression is I don't see myself applying this kind of learning. The creators of the Kagan structures and the people interviewed appraised this method a lot and it definitely had its advantages. Nevertheless, I don't quite agree with all of the noise created and I do not believe it is a class easy to deal with because it gets messy and confusing. Despite this, I am the type of person who believes that there are no clear cut rules when it comes to teaching. For me, I would definitely use some of the strategies suggested in the Kagan structures such as group work, jigsaw and other interactive activities, but I would also add my own touch to it just to personalize it even further and adjust it to suit my own teaching philosophy!

  1. I really like your argumentation and I believe that everyone of us have to use strategies that will be effective to our class . Not all methods function in every class , It depends on teachers and learners too . We have to practice different methods in our practice year in order to find the most effective strategies for our pupils .

  5. Hi Brixh! I read your comment here and I like the fact that you gave your honest opinion here related to the Kagan Structures.I agree on the fact that it may become too noisy while using these structures, but you can apply your own rules such as: If your students speak loudly, you can interrupt immediately the group work.

    1. Hello Doris! Teaching is spontaneous and constantly changing, but I think that somehow some aspects of it should be planned so as to succeed in teaching our learners effectively. Cooperative learning has given me some pretty good ideas how to make use of interactive techniques in class, but it has also taught me that there is always something to improve, there is always something you can adjust to fit you the way you want it to.

    1. In fact this is what I'm trying to say, that this kind of approach is not all too perfect and that we should consider both its advantages and drawbacks before applying it just so we don't fail in our attempt to "imitate" cooperative learning. Instead, we could easily adopt it to our own standards
